The Present Moment

How often do we allow the regrets of the past chain us down?

How often do we allow the anxieties of the future drain our enthusiasm?

I think about the past often and it makes me hate myself for all the foolish decisions I've made. I keep wishing that I could turn back time to change things. But that isn't realistic and it's a blessing in disguise. Before accepting the past, we have to come to terms with the fact that it cannot be changed. The time and energy we waste on regrets will not manifest into anything good. What has happened will stay that way and that's a good thing because it allows us to focus on the present moment. To fully concentrate on what we're doing right now. It's why some people say it's a blessing to have a short memory. It allows you to quickly move on and start over. What's done is done. Stop worrying about what you cannot change and focus on what you can.

The future, on the other hand, can be changed. But not through worry and anxiety. Only by focusing on the present moment can you truly influence the future. The uncertainty of the future is both good and bad. Bad because you don't know what misfortunes await you. Good because you don't have to think about those misfortunes now. Of course, it's good to plan for the future but that's not what I mean. I'm talking about situations like when you have to speak in front of a crowd and you're afraid because you keep worrying about what people will say about you. In that kind of situation, you will not have the time to worry about the crowd if you are fully focused on giving your speech. That's a very good example of what I'm trying to convey. If it comes later, worry about it later. Focus on the now and you'll do fine.

Time is our most valuable possession. The regrets of the past and the worry of the future are constantly stealing the time we can use to focus on the present moment. Live in the now. It's the best way to live.
